The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, was first recognized in the early 1980’s by medical professionals. The purpose of this discovery was to pinpoint the source behind people whose immune systems suddenly ceased to function. Today we know HIV as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) affecting over 1.2 million people in the United States. Of these individuals, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) has reason to believe 1 out of every 7 of these individuals is unaware that they have been infected with the virus.

Syphilis: A Really Sore Topic

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that began to surface in the early to mid-1900’s. It became a widespread threat to public health until the development of penicillin in 1941. Since then, the number of cases reported in the U.S. each year began to slowly decline, reaching an all time low in the year 2000. However, there has been a spike in reported cases, doubling from 8,724 in 2005 to 16,663 in 2013. Today will continue the series covering Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Putting A Stop To The Spread Of Gonorrhea And Chlamydia

Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are two of the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted diseases in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. The CDC has also found that Chlamydia holds the top spot with the most diagnosed cases each year. What’s interesting about these two diseases is how similar they are in regards to the nature of disease, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, risks and prevention. However the problem isn’t the diseases themselves, it’s how often they go un-diagnosed and develop into much more serious health problems due to a lack of awareness and accessible treatment.
