Knowing Your Liver: Primary Biliary Cholangitis

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC,) formerly referred to as primary biliary cirrhosis, is a chronic disease of the liver. What is unique about this disease is the inflammation of the bile ducts that slowly kills liver cells and leads to cirrhosis of the liver. (1) The American Liver Foundation states that “women account for about 90 percent of PBC cases. It is most commonly diagnosed in patients between the age of 35 and 60.” (1)
