The purpose of this discovery was to pinpoint the source behind people whose immune systems suddenly ceased to function. Today we know HIV as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) affecting over 1.2 million people in the United States. Of these individuals, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) has reason to believe 1 out of every 7 of these individuals is unaware that they have been infected with the virus.

Syphilis: A Really Sore Topic

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that began to surface in the early to mid-1900’s. It became a widespread threat to public health until the development of penicillin in 1941. Since then, the number of cases reported in the U.S. each year began to slowly decline, reaching an all time low in the year 2000. However, there has been a spike in reported cases, doubling from 8,724 in 2005 to 16,663 in 2013. Today will continue the series covering Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Raising Awareness of Cervical Cancer

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC,) over the last forty years cervical cancer has gone from being the most deadly cancer for women in the Unites States to being highly detectable and treatable. This medical shift has been made possible by early detection medical procedures and analysis such as the Pap Smear (Papanicolaou) test which takes specimen samples of cells from a woman’s cervix and makes them available to view under a microscope.
